What Is a Sun Spot?

A sun spot is the result of repeated and prolonged exposure to UV rays and appears as flat areas of brown, pigmented skin. Sun spots are also called age spots or liver spots and most commonly appear after the age of 40.

Are Sun Spots Skin Cancer?

A true sun spot is benign but you should have any skin discoloration inspected by our dermatologist to determine if it is cause for concern. While they are harmless, many patients wish to reduce the appearance of sun spots to boost their confidence and we can help with laser treatments, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion.

How Are Sun Spots Treated?

Laser therapy is the most popular treatment for sun spots. Sun spot removal works by using pulsed light to penetrate the top layers of skin. You will likely need a series of treatments to see the best results.

Chemical peels are another treatment method to reduce the appearance of sun spots. Gentle chemicals exfoliate the top layers of skin, which also improves the appearance of wrinkles and skin texture.

Microdermabrasion is gentle exfoliation of the top layer of skin. It can reduce the appearance of sun spots, but you will need several treatments to see the best results.

How Can I Prevent Sun Spots?

Limit your exposure to UV rays with protective clothing and wear SPF sunblock every day, especially on your face and hands. You still want to get some sunlight every day, but UV rays are strongest mid-day, so exercise precaution, especially in those hours, and check in with your dermatologist at least once a year for an exam and when you notice any changes in your skin.
